Is Ductwork Necessary for Efficiently Heating in Your Home or Business?

September 22, 2022 by Tom Hoffmann

At Thomas Hoffmann Air Conditioning and Heating, we can answer any questions you have regarding ductless systems and will help you determine if it’s the right choice for your home or business.

You can efficiently heat your home or business without ductwork. You may be wondering how this is possible. After all, your air ducts are what bring in the conditioned or heated air into your living or work space from your HVAC systems!

Ductless systems, also known as ductless mini-split heaters and air conditioners, are alternatives to conventional heating and cooling options. You’ve likely seen them but didn’t recognize what they were. There are several benefits to choosing ductless HVAC systems, one being they avoid energy loss associated with central forced air systems.

How a Ductless System Works

A ductless system includes one outdoor unit connected to up to four indoor air handlers. Each air handler operates independently from the other and is connected to the outdoor unit via a conduit consisting of a power line, condensate line, and refrigerant line. The air handlers are generally wall-mounted above doorways.

Benefits of Ductless Systems

Ductless heating and cooling systems don’t require any ductwork to circulate air throughout a room. Each air handler has its own thermostat, although it can be controlled by one central thermostat. There are many benefits of considering ductless heating and cooling:

  • You can cool just one room – You may want the temperature in your primary bedroom at 68 degrees, but you want the rest of the house to be 72 degrees. With central heating and cooling, you only have the option of setting the whole place to 68. You don’t need to run up your electric bill to cool your bedroom with a ductless mini-split.
  • Highly energy efficient – Ductwork can become damaged or leak air. As much as 30% of the air flowing through air ducts is lost. But ductless systems are more efficient because there isn’t any ductwork to worry about.
  • Environmentally friendly – This is because they’re so efficient. If a room doesn’t need to be cooled, that system can be turned off or turned up. You, therefore, use less energy.
  • Versatile – Some people have a three-season room built and want to use it as a living space. Others convert their garages into gyms or workspaces. A ductless mini-split is an easy and affordable way to cool or heat that space.
