HVAC Tips: Calculating the Right Size AC for Your Home

July 22, 2021 by Tom Hoffmann

If your AC is too big, you’ll waste energy and money. If it’s too small, you won’t get enough cool air flowing through your home. So how can you choose the right size?

Whether you’re making updates to your home, moving into a new one, or having a new home built, one of the most important decisions is choosing the right air conditioning system. With so many air conditioners brands, models, and sizes to choose from, calculating the right size for your home can seem overwhelming.

At Thomas Hoffmann Air Conditioning and Heating, our experts will help you determine the right size for your home and budget!

Factors to Consider

One main factor to consider when calculating the size of your AC system is your square footage. However, this isn’t always as simple as it sounds.

The square footage of your home, combined with heat gain/loss and environmental circumstances, will provide an approximate estimate for what size you need. A “Manual J” is a formal calculation that will take all inputs and give you the appropriate size. The best way to make the most accurate decision is to have this calculation performed.

The Manual J calculation is the most precise measurement available because it considers these additional factors:

  • Climate zone
  • Square footage
  • Ductwork
  • Number of windows
  • Natural sunlight or shade
  • Quality and amount of insulation
  • Number of people living in the space

Why the Sizing Important

Having the right size AC system in your St. Louis home is critical for staying comfortable all summer long. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all when it comes to an air conditioning or heating system. You must have your system properly measured so that we can determine the correct size for your home.

The benefits of having the correct size unit installed include:

  • Improved comfort
  • Improved efficiency
  • Reduced repairs
  • Prolongs the system’s lifespan
