What Does HVAC Stand For?
HVAC is an acronym that stands for:
Heating
Ventilation
Air Conditioning
Together, these systems are responsible for controlling your indoor environment—keeping you warm in winter, cool in summer, and providing clean, filtered air year-round.
The 3 Main Components of HVAC
1. Heating
This component includes your furnace, boiler, or heat pump. In colder months, it provides warm air to your home, usually through a system of ducts.
Types of Heating Systems:
Gas Furnaces: Common in Missouri homes due to efficiency and availability
Electric Furnaces: A good option in areas without natural gas
Heat Pumps: Provide both heating and cooling using outside air
Boilers/Radiators: Found in older homes, use hot water or steam
2. Ventilation
Ventilation ensures a constant exchange of indoor and outdoor air, which:
Removes stale air and pollutants
Controls humidity
Circulates heated or cooled air throughout the house
Your ductwork, exhaust fans, and air returns all play a role in ventilation. Homes with poor ventilation often suffer from poor indoor air quality, mold growth, and uneven temperatures.
3. Air Conditioning
The AC part of an HVAC system handles cooling and dehumidification. Most Missouri homes use central air conditioning systems or ductless mini-splits to cool down during the summer heat.
AC Components Include:
Compressor: Pumps refrigerant through the system
Evaporator Coil: Absorbs indoor heat
Condenser Coil: Releases heat outdoors
Thermostat: Controls temperature and triggers system cycles
How HVAC Systems Work
The magic of HVAC is that it’s a closed-loop system. Here’s a simplified process:
You set your thermostat.
The system detects a need for heating or cooling.
The furnace or AC kicks on, conditioning the air.
A blower moves the air through ducts and into your rooms.
Return vents pull stale air back into the system.
Filters clean the air during the cycle.
It’s a constant flow of air, designed to keep your entire home comfortable and breathable.
Common Types of HVAC Systems
1. Split Systems
Most common type in St. Louis homes
Includes separate units for heating (furnace) and cooling (AC condenser)
Shared ductwork
2. Heat Pump Systems
All-in-one heating and cooling
Ideal for moderate climates
Can be paired with a backup furnace for cold snaps
3. Ductless Mini-Split Systems
No ductwork required
Great for additions, basements, or homes without ducts
Individual zone control
4. Packaged HVAC Systems
All components are in one outdoor unit
Often used in commercial buildings or smaller homes
Why HVAC Maintenance Matters
Routine maintenance is the key to system performance and longevity. Without it, you’re likely to face:
Higher energy bills
Frequent repairs
Reduced comfort
Poor air quality
Premature system failure
Thomas Hoffmann Air Conditioning & Heating offers seasonal tune-ups and comprehensive maintenance plans for homes in St. Louis, Chesterfield, Ballwin, and surrounding areas.
Indoor Air Quality & HVAC
A well-functioning HVAC system doesn’t just regulate temperature—it filters and purifies the air in your home.
Ways to Improve Air Quality:
Use high-efficiency filters
Schedule duct cleaning
Install UV lights or air purifiers
Maintain proper humidity levels
If you suffer from allergies or respiratory issues, upgrading your HVAC system with IAQ components can make a major difference.
When to Replace or Upgrade Your HVAC System
Most HVAC systems last between 10 and 20 years, depending on maintenance and usage. You may need an upgrade if:
Your system is over 15 years old
You’re facing frequent, costly repairs
Energy bills are rising unexpectedly
Your home has hot or cold spots
Modern systems offer features like smart thermostats, variable-speed motors, and zoning controls, which drastically improve comfort and efficiency.
Choosing the Right HVAC Partner
The most crucial factor in HVAC performance isn’t the equipment—it’s the quality of installation and service. At Thomas Hoffmann Air Conditioning & Heating, we provide:
Honest, transparent pricing
Certified technicians—not subcontractors
Customized solutions for every home
Fast, reliable emergency service
We proudly serve local homeowners with personalized service you won’t get from national HVAC conglomerates.
