Summer electric bill spike in St. Louis? Your AC is usually why. Five causes, what to check first, and honest fixes from a local team.
You open the electric bill, do a double take, and check that it is actually yours. Summer bills always run higher in St. Louis, but a genuine spike, noticeably worse than the same month last year, is usually your air conditioner telling you something. Cooling is the single biggest line item on a summer electric bill, so when the number jumps, the AC is the first place to look.

First, Rule Out the Boring Explanations
An honest company tells you this part first. Before assuming your AC is failing, check two things. Compare this month’s usage in kilowatt hours, not dollars, against the same month last year; if usage is similar but the bill is higher, your utility’s rates went up, and your AC is innocent. Then consider the weather: a stretch of 100-degree heat-index days forces even a healthy system to run harder. Your utility’s website usually shows both numbers side by side. If your usage itself jumped and the weather was roughly normal, keep reading. Something in your system is working harder than it should.
1. A Clogged Filter or Dirty Coils
The most common culprit and the cheapest fix. A loaded filter chokes airflow, and grime on the indoor or outdoor coils blocks heat transfer. Either way, the system runs longer cycles to hit the same temperature, and every extra minute shows up on the bill. St. Louis makes this worse: long cooling seasons, heavy pollen, and cottonwood fluff coating outdoor units by mid-June. Replace the filter and gently clear debris from around the outdoor unit. Deep coil cleaning is part of a professional tune-up.
2. A Slow Refrigerant Leak
Low refrigerant is sneaky because the AC still works, just badly. It runs longer, cools less, and removes less humidity, so you feel warm and sticky while paying more. If your bills have crept up over two or three summers while comfort has crept down, a leak is a strong suspect. This is a certified technician repair: find the leak, fix it, and recharge the system.
3. Leaky or Uninsulated Ductwork
In many St. Louis homes, ducts run through attics that hit 130 degrees in July. If those ducts leak, and studies suggest a meaningful share of homes lose a significant portion of conditioned air through duct leaks, you are paying to cool the attic. Telltale signs: rooms that never quite cool, dust buildup near vents, and bills out of proportion to thermostat settings.
4. Short Cycling
If the system starts, runs a few minutes, and shuts off over and over, that is short cycling, and those constant starts draw far more power than steady running. Causes range from a failing thermostat or capacitor to icing coils or a system that was oversized on day one. Short cycling also beats up the compressor, so it is worth a professional look sooner rather than later.
5. A System Simply Wearing Out
Efficiency declines with age. A 12 to 15-year-old unit can use more electricity than a modern high-efficiency system to do the same job, and in St. Louis, our humidity accelerates that aging. If your system is in that range and the bills keep climbing, the spike is part of the repair-or-replace conversation and deserves honest math, not a sales pitch.
What to Do Next
Check the filter, clear the outdoor unit, and compare your usage history. If the numbers still do not make sense, a diagnostic visit can usually pinpoint the cause in one trip, and you get a written explanation of what we found and what it costs to fix before any work begins.
