I lost my AC overnight. I called at 8 and Nick got here at 12:30. He took his shoes off before he came in, which rarely happens with contractors. He diagnosed the problem in no time and was out the door in less than an hour. He also put back together the closet where access to the attic and furnace is. Couldn't be happier.

Why 12 Years Is the Turning Point
Most central air conditioners are built to last 12 to 15 years. In St. Louis, that range often lands on the shorter end. Our summers combine high heat with heavy humidity, which means local systems run longer and work harder than the national average. By year 12, compressors, capacitors, fan motors, and coils have all logged serious hours, and the odds of a second and third breakdown start climbing.
Age alone does not mean your AC is finished. A well-maintained 12-year-old system can have good years left. But it does mean every repair decision deserves more scrutiny than it did at year five.
Which Side of the Line Is Your AC On?
When a Repair Still Makes Sense
The fix is minor. Capacitors, contactors, fan motors, and refrigerant leaks at accessible fittings are common, relatively inexpensive repairs.
The system has been maintained. Annual tune-ups dramatically improve the odds that the rest of the system is still healthy.
This is the first significant breakdown. One failure in 12 years is a system aging normally, not a system falling apart.
Your energy bills have stayed steady. A system that still cools evenly without running constantly is earning its keep.
When Replacement Is the Smarter Money
The repair costs more than half the price of a new system. Past that line, you are investing heavily in equipment nearing the end of its life.
This is the second or third repair in a few years.Breakdowns tend to cluster as systems age. Paying twice per summer adds up fast.
Your system uses R-22 refrigerant. R-22 was phased out of production, so recharging an older R-22 system is expensive and only gets more so.
Cooling is uneven, or bills keep climbing. A modern high-efficiency replacement can cut cooling costs noticeably, especially through a St. Louis July.
You are planning to stay in the home. If you will be there five more years, a new system usually beats funding an old one repair by repair.
Get an Honest Answer, Not a Sales Pitch
Here is the problem with asking this question in St. Louis: many “local sounding” HVAC companies are owned by national groups, and their technicians are frequently paid to sell replacements. That makes it hard to trust the answer you get.
We do it differently. You get a written diagnosis and estimate before any work begins, with a clear explanation of what failed, why it failed, and what your options actually cost. If a repair is the smarter move, we will tell you so. If replacement makes sense, we install Trane systems as an authorized dealer, usually completed in a single day.
